Studying in New Zealand can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but navigating the visa process can be complex and challenging. Let’s explore everything you need to know about student visas in New Zealand and try and make your journey easy.

When applying to study at a tertiary institute in New Zealand, you must meet a strict set of requirements. These requirements include:

• having an offer of place from a New Zealand education provider
• english language proficiency
• meeting health and character requirements
• proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses
• if under 18, proof of arrangements for accommodation, support, and care

It is important to demonstrate that you have bona fide intention of being a genuine student and will return to your home country after completion of your study. You must not apply with the intention to pursue alternative motives, like looking for full-time employment. However, your right choice of study can pave a pathway to post-study open work visa and New Zealand residence (hyperlink).

Your choice of study may permit you to work upto 20 hours a week during the course of your full-time study and up to 40 hours a week during scheduled breaks and holidays.

Whilst studying in New Zealand you must:

• maintain enrollment in the approved program of study
• meet atlendance requirements
• maintain health insurance ; and
• return home at the end of the course or apply for a new visa

In order to prepare and present a robust study visa application, you need to support it with a clear outline of your study plans (SOP), show genuine funds to support your study and stay in New Zealand. You should also demonstrate your past academic performance, work and international travel history.

Some countries have more specific requirements such as China, Hong Kong, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. These requirements are with respect to additional documents relating to ID, funds, english language etc.
