Residence Visa for Parents
Parent-category Residence Visa permits parents to live and work in New Zealand for an indefinite period allowing them to enjoy many benefits such as access to subsidized healthcare, education, and a high quality of life.
The application is assessed based on your character, health, English language requirement, and your sponsor’s financial ability to support you.
Your sponsor can also join their income with their partner’s or a sibling’s income to meet the threshold required to sponsor one or both parents.
An eligible sponsor must
- be 18 years of age or over
- be your adult child; or
- be your adult child and their partner; or
- be your adult child and either another adult child; or
- be your partner’s adult child
- be a New Zealand resident or citizen for at least 3 years before applying
- be deemed to have spent at least 184 days in each of the last 3 years before applying for residence
- agree to meet your living costs for the first 10 years of your residence, if you are unable to
- agree to cover the costs of sending you home, if necessary
The amount a sponsor needs to earn to sponsor one parent is:
- 1.5 times the New Zealand median wage for a single sponsor
- 2 times the New Zealand median wage for joint sponsors
The sponsor must have earned at least the required minimum income for 2 years in the 3 years before your expression of interest was selected.
